- Category: Think texture, terrain, or an uncomfortable ride
Our first tip is that you should use one of the best Wordle start words for every game you play. But if you want some more specific clues to today’s Wordle answer, then here you go:

Wordle Difficulty Analysis for Puzzle #1,939
Why was this one trickier than most? Let’s break it down:

| Common Letters | 3/10 | None of the ten most common Wordle letters appear — ‘U’ sits in 11th place and ‘Y’ in 12th |
| Patterns | 4/10 | The B-start, Y-end combo narrows options nicely once you spot it |
| Vocals | 3/10 | Only one standard vowel, plus ‘Y’ acting as a surrogate |
| Traps | 8/10 | Plenty of similar-sounding words lurk here — JUMPY, LUMPY, DUMPY and more all fit the pattern |
By vowel, we mean A, E, I, O, U. There are other letters that are sometimes considered to be vowels, depending on how they are used.
Wait — What Is Today’s Wordle Answer?
Drumroll, please — the answer to Wordle #1,939 is…
BUMPY
Yes, BUMPY. Uneven. Lumpy. Full of literal or metaphorical speed bumps. Let’s walk through how you might have gotten there.
A Step-by-Step Walkthrough of Wordle #1,939
Hello Wordlers. A slightly tricky one today, on account of BUMPY failing to contain any of the ten most common Wordle letters. ‘U’ sits in 11th place, with ‘Y’ in 12th.
This meant that my opener of ORATE came up empty, with all five letters going gray and leaving a massive 253 possible answers, according to WordleBot.
The Bot’s best Wordle start words fared better. TARPS leaves 28 answers, while CLAMP lowers that to 18. If you opened with TAMPS, just nine options would remain.
I usually try and play a mix of ‘L’, ‘I’, ‘S’, ‘N’ and ‘C’ on my second turn. But when I completely strike out, the priority becomes testing both ‘I’ and ‘U’, which makes MUSIC my best bet.
It was a great move, turning ‘U’ green and ‘M’ yellow to leave eight options, according to WordleBot.
I tried DUMMY next. With the double letter, I thought I would almost certainly turn that ‘M’ green.
I was right: ‘M’ did go green, as did ‘Y’ to leave just three possibilities.
Unfortunately, I picked one of the wrong options first. It wasn’t LUMPY.
But I got it on my fifth turn. It was BUMPY, rather than JUMPY, letting me continue my streak in moderate comfort.
Hopefully you did it faster than me today, Wordlers. See you tomorrow.
The Eight Words That Fitted the Pattern
After hitting green on ‘U’, ‘M’ and ‘Y’, here’s the shortlist WordleBot identified:
- BUMPY
- JUMPY
- LUMPY
- GUMMY
- YUMMY
- DUMMY
- DUMPY
- HUMPH
Note how many of those are ‘_ U M _ Y’ words. That’s the trap right there. Once you’ve nailed down the pattern, it becomes a game of elimination — one guess per letter. Choose wisely.
Strategies That Work Specifically for Today’s Puzzle
If You’re Stuck on the Third Letter
With B _ _ _ Y locked in, and ‘U’ potentially at the second slot, the middle letter is wide open. Try a word that tests the most common fillers — think M, P, D and J. Words like DUMMY or GUMMY aren’t answers here, but they’ll smoke out the right third letter fast.
Avoid the ‘Y’ Trap
Plenty of players forget that ‘Y’ acts as a vowel. In BUMPY, it’s not just decoration — it’s carrying the entire vowel load at the end. Words ending in ‘Y’ are frequently overlooked in early guesses because people write off that final slot as low-value. It isn’t. Test it early.
The Pattern Unique to Today
Notice the double-letter decoy structure. Several of the closest answers — DUMMY, GUMMY, YUMMY — use a repeated letter. BUMPY doesn’t. Players who burned a guess on a double-letter word (like I did with DUMMY) actually spent a turn efficiently, because it ruled out a big chunk of the field.
Wordle #1,939 in Numbers
| Stat | Value |
|---|---|
| Average solves (easy mode) | 4.4 moves |
| Average solves (hard mode) | 4.3 moves |
| Options after ORATE opener | 253 |
| Options after MUSIC second guess | 8 |
BUMPY isn’t a rare word by any stretch — it’s a perfectly ordinary adjective used in everyday English. But it lives just outside the top-tier frequency list that most Wordle solvers rely on, which is exactly why it caught so many players off guard.
Compare that with yesterday’s puzzle, which had a far more common set of letters. BUMPY is the sneaky kind of Wordle answer — familiar enough to feel obvious once you see it, but invisible until you do.
For the Curious: The Story Behind BUMPY
BUMPY traces back to the word “bump,” which entered English in the 1500s as an imitation of the sound of a heavy blow. Add the ‘-y’ suffix and you get the adjective form — literally “full of bumps.”
It’s a word that stretches comfortably across contexts. A bumpy road. A bumpy flight. A bumpy first date. Even a bumpy relationship with your Wordle streak, if today went poorly. Linguists love it because the spelling practically mirrors the sensation — the hard ‘b’, the soft ‘p’, that final ‘y’ trailing off like a jolt you didn’t see coming.
In other languages, the equivalents are just as tactile: “holperig” in German, “cahoteux” in French, “sconnesso” in Italian. Apparently every culture has a word for the feeling of a poorly maintained road.
Yesterday’s Wordle Answer: A Quick Recap
If you’re reading this in a later time zone — or you simply missed it — the answer to Wordle #1,938 was MAJOR.
That one was tricky for a different reason: three possible letters could replace the ‘?’ in “MA?OR.” Were you going with MAYOR, MANOR or MAJOR? Three guesses, one shot. Players who tried MAYOR first (myself included) spent an extra turn before landing on MAJOR on the fifth go.
Yesterday’s possibilities included: FAVOR, RAZOR, SAVOR, VAPOR, MAJOR, MAYOR, RAYON, RADON, MANOR, RADIO, ADORN, ABHOR, AMOUR, and AGORA.
Compared to today, MAJOR had the edge in common letters — that ‘A’, ‘O’ and ‘R’ carried it. BUMPY had none of those luxuries.
Wordle Tips Worth Remembering for Tomorrow
So you survived #1,939. Here’s how to survive the next one without tearing your hair out:
- Always start with a data-backed opener. Words like ORATE, TARPS, CLAMP or TAMPS were built for this. They cover the most common letters in the most useful positions.
- Think about combinations, especially at the start and end. SH, ST, CR and CH all appear frequently. So do double letters, though less than you’d think.
- Never forget the Y. It’s a sneaky surrogate vowel, and it loves showing up at the end of words. If your first two guesses have no Y, consider testing it in your third.
- Don’t press Enter until you’re sure. So long as you haven’t committed, you can try out possible answers and see how they look on screen. Put in likely letters, then mentally swap one for another.
The best tip I can give is to use one of the best Wordle start words. I can’t stress this enough — it makes a massive difference. Without one, you’ll be scrabbling around in the dark, trying (and possibly failing) to find the right five letters out of 26 possibilities.
